Position: Permanent Part-Time

Hours: 21 hours per week

Wage: $28.00

Nature of Position:

The Roots Practice promotes and supports cultural planning for Aboriginal children in the care of the Ministry of Children and Family Development. Through collaboration with social workers and Aboriginal Community members a culturally specific plan of care is developed for each child that will include connections to life-long attachments and support with their community.

Duties:

  • Reviews done in partnership with the Ministry of Children and Family Development Social Workers, other aboriginal agencies, Bands, and Delegated Agencies as applicable.
  • Assist in the review process as described by Ministry of Children and Family Development guidelines.
  • Provide cultural information to assist in the development of Plans of Care.
  • Prepare Genograms for children in care.
  • Initiate contact with extended family or community members of children in care.
  • Complete packages for cultural presentations.
  • Identify resources required for alternative placements.
  • Propose placements and service plans to Ministry of Children and Family Development.
  • Provide cultural plans for children being adopted by non-Aboriginal families.
  • Participate in discharge planning for Children in Care who are exiting care.
  • Provide a summary report outlining the number of hours spent on each review.
  • Other activities as agreed upon by both parties.
  • Provide guardianship Social Worker with appropriate cultural information to assist in developing plans of care for Aboriginal children.

Qualifications:

  • Diploma or higher in Health/Human Service or related field plus related experience; Or
  • Certificate in Health/Human Service or related field plus 2 years related experience.
  • Experience working with Indigenous families and communities.
  • Knowledge of the First Nations communities in BC and Canada
  • Knowledge of the child and/or youth in care process
  • Demonstrate understanding of Status, Non-Status, Metis, Inuit, and On and Off Reserve
  • Model or mentor positive cultural influence, knowledge, and historical understanding of Aboriginal issues

Requirements:

  • Valid BC Driver’s license, reliable vehicle, and clean driver’s abstract
  • Must consent to criminal record check (vulnerable sector)
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
