Hours: Hours may be available to On-call Casual staff on an as-needed basis. On-call casual employees may be required to work on any day of the week and at any time during the day for day shifts, evening shifts and overnight shifts.

About the Opportunity:

Tupa’s Lodge, operated by the Ki-Low-Na Friendship Society, is a transitional housing program providing a safe, supportive, and culturally grounded home for Indigenous mothers/birthers and their babies. We are seeking compassionate Family Wellness Advocates / Support Workers to help participants build confidence, stability, and strong family connections within a nurturing environment.

This role is ideal for someone empathetic, community-oriented, and dedicated to working in a trauma-informed and culturally safe way.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Participant Advocacy: Support participants in co-creating and implementing personalized family wellness plans that reflect their unique strengths and needs.
  • Empowerment and Guidance: Help Indigenous mothers/birthers navigate life’s challenges with confidence and resilience.
  • Evening Wellness Checks: Conduct regularly scheduled nightly checks to ensure a safe and comfortable environment.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain clear and detailed log entries to support effective communication among staff.
  • Morning Operations: Disarm the alarm and open the Lodge at 6:00 AM, preparing for a positive and structured day.
  • Crisis Support: Provide culturally sensitive intervention and support during emergencies.
  • Behavioral Support: Assist with participant guidance and accountability in a respectful and empathetic manner.
  • Cultural Familiarity: Follow the Tupa’s Lodge Handbook to uphold community harmony and cultural integrity.
  • Data Management: Maintain accurate and timely records to support coordinated family services.
  • Transport Clients/Driving: Transport clients to and from appointments and events and pick up supplies for the Lodge.
  • Meal and Grocery Assistance: Support grocery shopping and meal planning that reflects cultural preferences and participant needs.
  • Safety Monitoring: Ensure fire and emergency systems are operational and safety protocols are followed.
  • Participant Reception: Sign participants, staff, and visitors in and out in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Program Engagement: Encourage and support participants’ involvement in Lodge activities and Indigenous cultural programming.
  • Facility Maintenance: Contribute to the cleanliness, organization, and overall upkeep of the Lodge.
  • Team Collaboration: Attend staff wrap-around meetings and support trauma-informed care practices.
  • Coordinator Support: Work closely with the Tupa’s Lodge Manager and Coordinator to deliver holistic, coordinated services for all participants.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum Grade 12 education; post-secondary studies in Human Services or a related field are an asset.
  • Experience working with high-risk families or youth.
  • Knowledge of addiction, mental health, and trauma-informed practices.
  • Experience working with Indigenous families and a commitment to cultural humility and safety.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a calm and supportive approach.
  • Preferred certifications: Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, First Aid, and Mental Health First Aid.

Requirements:

  • Clear Criminal Record Check (vulnerable sector).
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License, Clear Driver’s Abstract, Proof of Vehicle Insurance, and access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Signing of Ki-Low-Na Friendship Society’s Confidentiality Agreement
  • Ability to work a variety of flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and on-call shifts is an asset.
